Why choose Sal
Sal is often the first island foreign visitors know well: it has an international airport, Santa Maria, accessible beaches, restaurants, water-sport schools and a more visible expat community than other islands. It is practical, but it should not be judged only through a holiday lens. Wind, seasonality, tourist prices and housing supply all change everyday life.
Areas worth checking
Santa Maria is the most requested area for beach access and holiday rentals. Espargos feels more local and administrative, which can help with daily services. Before renting or buying, spend time in the area during the day and in the evening, checking noise, real distance from the sea, supermarkets, transport, perceived safety and building maintenance.
Home and budget
Your budget should include more than rent or mortgage: utilities, internet, condominium fees, maintenance, insurance, groceries and imported products matter. If the goal is holiday letting, you also need reliable local management, cleaning, strong photography, durable furniture and a conservative estimate of the months that will really be booked.
Who Sal suits best
Sal works well for people who want sea, tourism services and a simple base. It is less suitable for people looking for green landscapes, mountains or a life completely outside the tourist circuit. For a stable relocation, the minimum test should last a few normal weeks, not just beach days and excursions.
